I am an artist living in Tucson.

You can view a very small cross section of my work here in my on-line galleries.

I was was born in Dallas, Texas and roamed the green hills of east Texas until age twelve. At that time I moved to Tucson to cure my chronic asthma. It worked. I thrived in the desert. Tucson was a different world for me in every way. First, it was a completely different landscape - totally different plants and animals. Also different people. I grew up on the south side of Tucson near the Tohono O'odham reservation. Culture was different too. I was immersed in local Tucson culture which is a mix of Anglo, Spanish and Indian. I had Indian, Mexican, Chinese, Black and Anglo friends.

Always drawing and painting, I attended the University of Arizona, getting a B.F.A. in Studio Art with a minor in Art History. I have been painting for over 45 years in oils and acrylics, as well as digital painting with Photoshop for over 25 years. I also use several other mediums such as gouache, casein, watercolor and colored pencil. I paint everything that catches my interest. Some of my favorites subjects are landscapes, cityscapes, still life, botanicals, fantasy, historic and scientific. I've painted everything from 50 foot historic murals to 4 inch landscapes.

I've shown paintings in galleries, worked on private commissions and freelanced in the commercial illustration field for many many years. I have done educational illustration for most of the major publishers, including MacMillan, McGraw-Hill, SRA, and many others. In 1998 I started work on the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan for Pima County - work that would stretch over the next 10 years. I did hundreds of illustrations, report covers, maps, charts, and even created the website.

During this time, I was also commissioned by Pima County, the National Park Service, and the Arizona Department of Transportation to create 11 signs to go along the historic Anza trail as it winds through southern Arizona. I still live in Tucson, at the northern end of the Sonoran Desert, and have a large garden of native and exotic flora and fauna.

Tutorials and Blog:

I am now teaching classes on SkillshareGet two months of Skillshare for free here: https://www.skillshare.com/r/user/billsingleton

I researched all the on-line learning sites and Skillshare is my favorite. Lynda and Udemy are also great but Skillshare has them beat in a couple of ways. The first is price. Skillshare is about half the price of Lynda. (Lynda.com is now LinkedIn Learning) Udemy classes are paid for individually so you only get one at a time. Whereas in Skillshare you have access to the entire library of over 30,000 classes. Any this library is growing daily. There is about any topic you might be interested in: from Oil Painting and Animation to Computer Programming, creating web sites and setting up a small business. If you do subscribe, you’ll have access to all my classes as well as the entire library of 30,000 classes and growing. There are two types of memberships on Skillshare. The first one is a free membership, you don’t pay anything and get access to a whole lot of courses, limited of course, but still, it will get you well on your way. To become a free member you create an account and then you’re ready to browse through all classes and take all the ones categorized as free. You will also be able to view the intros/promos for the premium classes, but if you want to take the complete course you will have to upgrade to a premium membership.

You can see some of my other artwork and sketches on my blog site.
